As part of the Media Masters project, the Institute for Media Communication at FERI UM held its third educational event aimed at students and teachers of the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Maribor (SERŠ). The workshop, titled “How to Distinguish the Real from the Fake?”, focused on developing digital and media literacy skills and recognizing fake information in today’s digital environment.
The event began with an introduction to key concepts of media literacy and an emphasis on the role of information in society. Students then engaged in small group discussions about their experiences and challenges in distinguishing between true and misleading content. Each group presented an example that served as a starting point for a broader discussion.
Together, they analyzed various types of informational materials — from videos to online posts and photographs — highlighting characteristics that may indicate their credibility or deceptive nature.
In the practical part of the workshop, participants played the educational board game Media Masters, which is based on real-life scenarios and encourages critical thinking, source verification, and responsible media use. During the game, students strengthened their argumentation skills and awareness of information ethics.
The workshop concluded with a reflective discussion, where students shared the challenges they encountered and key lessons they can apply in their everyday lives. The event confirmed the importance of raising awareness among young people about the value of quality information and developing critical judgment..
